SambaCry Is The New WannaCry !!

What is SambaCry?

SambaCry is a seven year old Samba vulnerability, which may be the next biggest problem for the world after WannaCry. This vulnerability got exposed after WannaCry attack on Windows systems.

Samba is the most popular file sharing system for all Linux Systems. Samba is also a multi platform tool as it also woks as a client that lets you work with Windows network, which makes SambaCry much more bigger problem.

It is speculated by the experts that it can easily be exploited with just few lines of code, and can be more harmful then the WannaCry attack. This vulnerability can mainly effect corporate network storage system (NSS), home routers and other devices that use Samba for file sharing.

How to tackle it?

There are many solutions available to protect you from this problem.
  • First and obvious one is the Patch, which is provided by the Samba organization, that works for version 4.4 onwards: patch.
  • Don't open your NAS boxes to the internet.
  • Check with the vendor of your NAS or other network storage devices whether patches are needed or not.
My advice is to be vigilant and try to install the latest patch as soon as possible.
